Oil & Gas

Oil & Gas Industry

The oil and gas industry encounters a wide array of emerging contaminants throughout routine production and maintenance processes. Due to the frequency and potential negative environmental impact of these contaminants, the industry has very strict regulations to minimize their effects as much as possible. Common PFAS-related remediation needs in this industry stem from the use of aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) or firefighting foam. The role of the foam is to eliminate fires or control odor releases, but often has serious impacts to the environment. Flammable materials with low flashpoints can be stopped with the use of this foam, however when it is mixed with oil, water, and other contaminants it requires treatment. Due to fire training, an essential activity to prepare for emergency events, the release of this foam leads to PFAS coming into contact with fire trucks and equipment. Additionally, these trainings can lead to groundwater, and even drinking water, contamination.

ECT2’s Solutions and Experience

Coupling our team’s experience designing equipment to meet the industry’s specific standards and their familiarity with oil and gas regulations allows for ECT2 to accommodate many different remediation needs. Our prior project experience has proven that we can efficiently clean up foam that is sprayed on crude oil fires, which requirements co-contamination treatment.

Following the release of AFFF associated fire events, vapor control or fire trainings, collecting the water containing AFFF foam with PFAS is essential for minimizing contamination to the environment. Once the contaminated water is collected, ECT2’s rapid response program offers mobile systems to quickly treat contaminated water on-site. For permanent systems, our team of experts can provide standard or customized treatment systems to meet site requirements. In either scenario, our research and development team can run treatability tests to create a site-specific system to continually treat water to non-detect levels required by the EPA Method 1633 test.

Looking ahead, ECT2 is prepared to treat a multitude of groundwater and drinking water needs as regulations continue to tighten.
