Quick to Tackle the Tough Challenges

Portland, Maine, USA. (March 11, 2021) – After announcing Emerging Compounds Treatment Technologies, Inc.’s (“ECT2”) European presence in Sweden and Germany in late 2020, our team quickly got to work on raising awareness regarding PFAS-contamination issues, and educating the water treatment industry on the sustainable, regenerable resin-based PFAS treatment solutions that are available. With a wide-range of treatment systems that can be applied to drinking water, groundwater, surface water and more, ECT2 is able to comply with short-and-long-term needs with permanent, modular, and mobile vessels.

By October 2020, ECT2 had two pilot studies operating in Sweden.  A drinking water pilot in Gävle was commissioned by the municipal drinking water utility Gästrikevatten to address concerns around PFAS concentrations in a municipal drinking water well in Valboåsen. While the current PFAS levels are below the National Food Agency’s action limit, Gastrikevatten wants to be proactive to reduce levels even further, ensuring safe drinking water for all.  Before investing in a full-scale system, Gästrikevatten wanted to test different remediation techniques in order to determine the optimal response for their needs.

Based on our extensive experience in the emerging contaminants field – particularly PFAS – and a focus on bringing smart solutions to tough challenges, Gästrikevatten chose to work with ECT2 to conduct this remedial solution evaluation. “ECT2’s pilot systems have been deployed all over the world, offering stakeholders the opportunity to see how different removal techniques work, and how cost effective they are at removing contaminants,” says Jeff Lewis, ECT2’s General Manager in Sweden. “This pilot system will be evaluated for a predetermined amount of time, after which the client will be able to determine the best course of action for the local community, both from a public-health and economic standpoint.”

The pilot system is comparing Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) to ECT2’s SORBIX PURE ion exchange resin.  These synthetic resins have been shown to be 13x more effective in removing PFAS when compared to GAC, and initial results in Gävle support this.  SORBIX PURE is the most efficient technology on the market for removing PFAS compounds, including both long-and-short chain molecules. To date, the pilot has treated over 45,000 liters with SORBIX PURE and has had no breakthrough while both PFOA and PFOS have been detected in the GAC-treated water which has seen only 20,000 liters treated.

In the last five years, ECT2 has treated over 6 billion liters of PFAS-contaminated water around the world. Our in-house R&D lab continues to develop leading technology that is eliminating PFAS from water while offering various industries a sustainable, proven remediation solution. With 35+ PFAS treatment systems installed or under construction worldwide, ECT2 continues to work to provide field-proven remediation solutions today that can handle tomorrow’s environmental challenges.
