PORTLAND, Maine, USA / NEWCASTLE, Australia — November 27, 2024 – ECT2, a Montrose Environmental Group company, in conjunction with Power and Water Corporation, has been selected as a winner of the 2024 Northern Territory Water Awards. These awards, presented by Engineers Australia, are to honour the Territory’s best projects and professionals. In collaboration with Power and Water Corporation, ECT2 received the Infrastructure Project Innovation Award for the Katherine PFAS Water Treatment Plant. This project successfully delivered a water treatment solution for PFAS contamination in the community’s drinking water supply.
Due to the historical use of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) at RAAF Base Tindal, PFAS contaminated the groundwater of the Tindal aquifer, which is used to the supply the Katherine community. A quick and proven solution was required to provide the township with secure and safe drinking water. ECT2 partnered with Power and Water Corporation and the Department of Defence to design, fabricate, transport, install, and commission the interim treatment system, all within four months of the PFAS being identified in the water. Utilising ECT2’s proprietary SORBIX™ ion exchange resins, this treatment system provided a sustainable solution due to the ability to regenerate resin once PFAS adsorption levels were reached. Therefore, a significant reduction in waste generation is achieved. This interim system went online in October 2017 and by March 2024, has treated over 2.3 billion litres of water.
To meet the continued long-term water supply requirements for the community, ECT2 was engaged by Power and Water Corporation again to design a treatment system with the capacity to process 10 ML of water per day (ML/d). The full-scale 10 ML/d plant uses the same proven treatment technology. The plant’s performance comfortable exceeds the Australian Drinking Water Guideline requirements, and meets the recently published updated, and more stringent, guidelines. This was a unique project in Australia, in both the scale of the plant and the execution of the project, which was in a remote part of the Australian continent. The 10 ML/d plant was commissioned in November 2023.
Winners went on to represent the Territory in the National Engineers Australia Awards, which were presented at the 2024 Awards Night, in Brisbane. To learn more about this project, watch the videos below.
