How can you quickly, reliably and economically remove PFAS from landfill leachate? One option that is proving popular with landfills throughout Scandinavia is ECT2’s proprietary Fluorflok system of flocculation and flotation.

How does it work?

The way we set up your system will depend on the water you need to treat and other factors, but here’s an example of how it works:

There are three steps in this example:

  1. Flocculate it

The system pumps the leachate containing the PFAS into a tank with three chambers, where we add:

  • polyaluminium chloride to create small insoluble lumps (called ‘flocs’) in the leachate;
  • ECT2’s solution Fluorflok, which binds the PFAS to the flocs; and then
  • a polymer to make the flocs bigger.
  1. Skim it off

Next, the water enters a container where tiny bubbles lift the PFAS-laden flocs to the surface. A scraper skims this concentrated sludge out of the tank, removing the PFAS from the water.

  1. Dewater it

Finally, a screw press dewaters the sludge, greatly reducing the volume of PFAS-laden waste that needs to be destroyed. The clean water returns into the closed-loop system.
